To prevent bleeding, of course. Bleed, I personally used to like a pig, so I turned around, without the blood platelets, which was flooded in no time.

If you mean, why use towels instead of tampons, I personally always tampons uncomfortable, and I hated from the string hanging like a dead mouse was inserted into the vagina, is achieved.
